Descriptor: U.S. Navy’s Full Ship Shock Trial of 2021 (FSST2021)

This article describes a publicly available dataset comprising underwater acoustic recordings of large underwater explosions from the U.S. Navy’s Full Ship Shock Trial (FSST) conducted off the coast of Florida, USA, in the summer of 2021. The FSST included three controlled detonations. High-intensity sounds of the explosions were captured using fifteen purpose-built Rockhopper autonomous recording units (K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA) that were placed at strategic locations around the planned test area. The dataset contains audio clips containing calibrated waveforms of the explosion sounds received at various distances from the detonation locations. The accurately captured acoustic pressure waves of the high-intensity impulses were originally intended to support ground-truthing of the U.S. Navy’s underwater acoustic propagation models. These are now made available to the wider community with the hope of supporting studies in modeling, assessing disturbances to marine soundscapes, potential impacts on marine fauna, etc.
