Data Skills for the Future: Leveraging University-Industry Collaborations

In the face of evolving economic pressures and technological advancements, universities must adapt to remain relevant. One way to do this is by leveraging the power of partnerships to address the data skills gap. This paper examines two successful models: the Relational Insights Data Lab (RIDL) at Griffith University in Australia, and the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) at Newcastle University in England. Both institutions employ scalable, project-based approaches to integrate practical data and eScience capabilities within local commercial and government organisations. Our analysis highlights their shared focus on skill transfer and continuous improvement, aligning with the 2024 Australian Universities Accord and Australia’s draft National Science and Research Priorities to enhance data literacy and promote sustainable economic growth. We call on policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to support, test, and expand these models.
