THz or VLC for Indoor Communication Scenario: Performance and Trade-Offs in the Presence of Human Blockages

Terahertz (THz) communication and visible light communication (VLC) stand out as potential enabling technologies for the rapid development of the next generation of wireless networks. This paper compares and analyzes the performance of indoor THz and VLC systems. Primarily, we execute a detailed deterministic channel modeling for both systems. Further, we make a detailed comparison of capacity performance achieved between the THz access points (THz-APs) and the VLC access points (VLC-APs) in the absence and presence of human blockages. The simulation results show that the THz and VLC system capacity increases at a lower density of human blockages. On the other hand, capacity decreases when more human blockages are present in the room. Consequently, the proposed comparison study will be useful to system designers in an indoor communication system based on THz or VLC.
