Innovative Research and Application of Minnan Concrete Bricks Patterns Based on Image Processing

Originating in the 19th century, Minnan concrete bricks carry the life interests and memories of the people in Xiamen, Fujian Province. However, nowadays, the Minnan concrete bricks in old buildings are gradually fading from people’s view due to industrialization. To explore the potential of image processing technology and digital design in the patterns of Minnan concrete bricks, this paper proposes a pattern extraction method based on the Canny algorithm. First, the guided filtering method is used to preprocess the flower brick images to obtain a clear instrumental image, while the edges are extracted using an improved Canny algorithm. Second, shape grammar is used to formulate derivation rules to generate new patterns based on the original Minnan concrete bricks. Finally, the generated pattern is applied to packaging design. This study combines the structure, color, and other characteristics of Minnan concrete brick patterns and integrates traditional aesthetics into modern design. This not only expands the innovative design dimension of Minnan culture but also provides new ideas for the inheritance and protection of Minnan concrete brick culture.
