Remote Controlled Electric Outlet using FSK Modulation Towards Daisy-Chain M2M Communication

IoT (Internet of Things) has become ubiquitous in our daily lives, from acquiring measurement data and automating our tasks to controlling something from a remote place. With additional features like Artificial Intelligence for cloud and edge computing, we can obtain new and rich capabilities, like computer vision, decision-making, providing recommendations, and predictive analysis. Using remote control capability via Internet connectivity gives flexibility for the user in time and place perspectives. However, in a remote area where the Internet is not accessible, a classic method like using a simple modulation technique would come in handy to send a control signal, for example, to turn on/off an electronic device plugged into an electrical outlet. This research implements a remote-controlled electric outlet to turn on a piece of specific electrical equipment using FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) modulation. The system’s performance was measured using delay and distance between the remote control and the electric outlet switch, with and without obstacles. Without an obstacle, the system can cover a maximum distance of 440 meters with a delay of 0.83 seconds, while with an obstacle the maximum distance becomes 61 meters with a delay of 0.66 seconds.
