A Smart Wearable IoT Wristband for Infectious and Elderly Patients Telehealth-Monitoring System

For infectious and elderly patients, especially those living alone, real-time monitoring of heart rate, body temperature, and SpO2 is crucial. A contactless method is needed to promptly alert doctors or family members in emergencies. In a telehealth system, wearable devices play an important role in ensuring measurement accuracy and real-time performance. However, achieving real-time functionality is challenging due to limited battery capacity and the need for frequent charging. To overcome this limitation, a method to reduce power consumption for wearable devices is proposed in this paper. We propose a data collection strategy with flexible measurement interval for gathering patients’ health parameters and a packed BLE Protocol Data Unit for energy-saving communication to address these challenges. By employing these solutions, the experimental measurement indicates that the average power consumption of the wearable wristband when the patient is in normal health state can be improved by around 59% compared to the case of continuous measurement, while an acceptable latency of nearly 50 ms is maintained within a distance of 5 meters.
