Mini-LED Backlight with Novel Structural Film for VR Liquid Crystal Displays

Mini light-emitting diode (Mini-LED) backlight units (BLUs) with high local dimming technology can reduce power consumption while maintaining high contrast and luminance. However, Mini-LED technology may lead to bright spots on the display because of the discrete arrangement of MiniLEDs, particularly in thinner displays. This report proposes a practical design that effectively reduces the effects of bright spots by using commercially films in combination with novel proposed structural film. Furthermore, due to the densely arranged design of the proposed structural film, precise alignment is not required when assembling the BLU. Here, a 2.75-inch prototype BLU with a thickness of 0.895 mm, achieving a uniformity of 92.35%, was experimentally verified.
