Grid-tied Solar PV System for EV Charging Application with RBCN-LMS Control Scheme

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system gained wide importance owing to its sustainability, cost-effectiveness, low maintenance, higher efficiency, reduce carbon footprints, affordability and flexibility. Integration of PV system for Electric Vehicles (EV) charging application on the other hand growing to boost cleaner transportation. This paper discloses an adaptive control for grid connected PV system based charging infrastructure of EV battery. A major challenge of this kind of system is that utilization of solar energy to effective carry out the power management. On the other hand, non-linear loads are injecting the harmonics into the grid currents which can degrade the power quality of the system. To eliminate this problem, a robust biased compensated normalized least mean square (RBCN-LMS) control technique is proposed. This control technique is used for extracting the fundamental load currents of the system which can further be used for reduction in harmonics of grid currents. The proposed control scheme is implemented for VSC which is connected at point of common coupling (PCC) and the control includes PV array, EV Battery and DC-link feed forward components. This has advantages with respect to improvement in power quality, robustness, faster dynamic response, convergence speed, reduction in computational burden, and reduction in harmonics. This system is designed and tested under different conditions such as (i) sudden variation of irradiance and (ii) sudden disconnection of load and (iii) islanded mode.
