Design & Simulation of Fuel cell/Battery Hybrid Energy Storage System

This work presents the design and simulation of a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) integrating a fuel cell with a battery, managed by bidirectional DC-DC converters. The proposed system aims to capitalise on the complementary characteristics of each energy storage element; the fuel cell provides a stable power supply, the battery offers high energy density for extended use, and handles peak loads with its high-power density and rapid charging/discharging capabilities. Utilising a sophisticated control strategy, the system dynamically manages energy flows to meet varying load demands efficiently, thereby enhancing the overall performance and extending the lifespan of the storage components. The design underscores the potential of HESS in applications requiring a reliable and continuous power supply, such as renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and grid stabilisation. Simulation results demonstrate the system’s adeptness at offering a balanced energy solution, which is both resilient and adaptable to fluctuating power requirements, highlighting the feasibility of such a system for advanced energy management applications.
