Development of an IoT-Enabled Smart Drainage and Health Monitoring System for Enhancing Safety and Efficiency of Manual Scavengers

This paper proposes an integrated IoT-based system to address the challenges faced by manual scavengers and improve overall drainage management in urban areas. The system consists of two key components: smart drainage monitoring, which uses an IoT-enabled network to track water flow, detect blockages, and trigger maintenance alerts to prevent overflows; and health monitoring of manual scavengers, where wearable IoT devices continuously monitor the vital signs, toxic gas exposure, and skin conditions of the vulnerable workforce. By combining smart drainage management and health monitoring, this system aims to enhance public sanitation, protect manual scavengers, and work towards the eradication of this inhumane practice. The paper discusses the system architecture, key technologies, and the potential societal impact of this integrated approach to addressing this critical public health and humanitarian issue.
