Ultra-Wideband Transmissive Programmable Metasurface for Dynamic Electromagnetic Modulation

In this article, a novel ultra-wideband (UWB) 1bit reconfigurable metasurface transmitarray antenna is proposed. To enhance the bandwidth of the transmitarray, a new method is introduced on the transmissive programmable metasurface. The unit cell in the metasurface is integrated with two PIN diodes, and thus a binary-coded phase is realized for a single polarization. Furthermore, to achieve the low-profile design, a butterfly patch design is utilized throughout the unit. The difference is that a unidirectional arrow patch is used instead of the butterfly body portion of the receiver layer. A 20×20 elements low-profile transmitarray is designed. The simulated peak gain is 22.4dB, and the gain bandwidth is about 50%(from 16.8 to 27.5 GHz). The technology provides a new approach to meet the demand for broadband transmission in wireless communication and radar applications.
