A Comprehensive Analysis of LNG-powered and Battery-powered Ships in Current Maritime Operations

The maritime industry is at a critical juncture in the face of global environmental concerns and the urgent need for sustainable development. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of current operating liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered and battery-powered ships, focusing on their ship type distribution and operation area distribution. With the data obtained from the study, this study compares and analyses the two new energy power sources in terms of environmental impacts and regulations, geographical advantages and advanced technologies, using Norway as an example. Drawing on these insights, the paper projects future developments for both types of ships, considering potential growth and transformation in ship type and operation area distributions, technological challenges, and environmental regulation considerations that could emerge in the coming years.
