Ultra-Wideband Microstrip Patch Antenna with the Profile of 1.6 mm Covering 3.14~5.51 GHz for 5G Mobile Terminal Applications

Due to the urgent demand for multi-generation communication technology and multi-band mobile terminal applications, more antennas with diverse functions are needed to cover the frequency bands required by practical applications. However, most of the existing mobile antennas are wire antennas, which are mainly concentrated on the metal bezel of the terminals, making the metal bezel so crowded. refers to the lowest frequency of the operation band) is adopted for covering 3.14~5.51 GHz (including 5G N77/N78/N79) on the back cover and it can reduce the number of the antennas on the metal bezel. The first two characteristic modes of the half-mode patch antenna are used and the magnetic-coupling method is adopted to generate additional resonances to widen the bandwidth. As a result, the proposed patch antenna achieves ultra-wideband and low profile. The measured results show that the proposed mobile patch antenna obtains a bandwidth of 3.14~5.51 GHz (54.8%) with a total efficiency higher than -1.7 dB (67.6%), which has great potential to be applied in 5G mobile terminal devices.
