Further developments in pandapower and pandapipes

Open-source Python libraries pandapower and pandapipes provide the capabilities to simulate and analyze energy systems. While pandapower focuses on modeling electric power systems, pandapipes was developed for pipe-based grids that transport compressible and non-compressible mediums such as natural gas, hydrogen, or heating and cooling water. This paper introduces the most important updates in the last year, covering the developments from the release of pandapower version 2.12.0 to 3.0.0 and pandapipes version 0.8.4 to 0.11.0. The content is organized in the following way. First, we introduce the new features of pandapower. We extended the power flow simulation to hybrid AC/DC grids and added new elements VSC converter, DC bus, and DC line. A new backend power-grid-model was added for power flow calculations. We implemented the calculation of Outage Transfer Distribution Factors (OTDF) in a new function. In addition, we added a fuse model as a new protection element. Furthermore, we added new controller types and adjusted the models of 2-winding and 3-winding transformers. We changed the format of geographical data representation to geojson, and added a plugin for QGIS. Finally, we adjusted the converter from DigSILENT PowerFactory to pandapower to export the new DC elements and new controllers.As for pandapipes, we implemented changes with a focus mainly on heating grids including a bi-directional coupling of heat transfer and hydraulics calculation, a new heat consumer component and standard types for heating pipes. Additional changes to the hydraulics calculation model improve accuracy and simplify future features like gas mixture calculation.
