Integration of Modular Energy Storage Solutions in the Distribution Grid

This paper analyzes the inclusion of energy storage systems using the iBatt concept, a modular smart battery capable of being used as an interface of Li-Ion battery modules to grid connection. The proposed concept is embedded into the so-called multihome scenario. In there, the use of a novel architecture for the integration of active buildings to the distribution grid is presented. Control modes for the iBatt and the interlinking converter used for the building grid connection are explained. A complete setup has been built for the evaluation of the proposed system. In this paper, preliminary experimental results are presented to confirm the viability of the idea and the different operation modes.
