Asymmetric Operation of Power Lines by Using E-STATCOM and Internal Model Controllers

Asymmetric operation of power lines offers the possibility to retain some degree of power flow with a tripped off phase. This paper presents a E-STATCOM-based control method-ology to enable asymmetrical operation of power lines using internal model controllers. Additionally, an analysis of ground current implications is carried out to assess the practicality of the proposed solution. The control methodology and performance of the system is validated via simulations and further conclusions are drawn regarding the implications of using this approach to operate transmission lines in power systems.
