An Intelligent Strategy for Multi-Functional Use of Grid-Forming Inverters

The grid-forming inverters (GFMIs) play a pivotal role in modern power systems, serving for providing several grid-supporting services. Beyond its traditional role in voltage regulation, power control, and inertial-frequency support, it possesses the capability to manage harmonics, reactive power, and fluctuations on the DC side. This inherent versatility opens up possibilities for providing ancillary services without compromising its primary functions. However, challenges such as voltage imbalance can limit its capacity and potentially lead to overcurrent conditions. In this context, we present a novel control strategy aimed at optimizing the inverter's excess capacity to enhance power quality in grids while safeguarding against overcurrent situations. This innovative approach eliminates the need for direct measurements of nonlinear load currents by dynamically adjusting harmonic compensation based on the available inverter capacity. Through implementation and simulation using Simulink MATLAB, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed strategy, showcasing its potential to significantly enhance the multi-functional capabilities of GFMIs in power systems.
