Healthy Longevity: Smart Home in a Smart City

Engineering students benefit by working on projects where they develop solutions to address current real-world problems. We describe an approach to enable students to gain experience through collaborating with researchers in industry and academia. Students developing solutions for different domains develop interdisciplinary problem-solving skills. Undergraduate engineering students working on their Capstone projects are able to collaborate with researchers and graduate students at an academic research lab and participate in cutting edge research. Under a pilot initiative, we connected research labs at West Virginia University in the US with Université Paris-Saclay in France enabling graduate students at both Universities to learn about each other's work. This paper outlines the steps taken to expand the students’ learning opportunities and the kinds of projects that are being pursued.
