Development of an Engineering Drawing Course Structure with CAD Software Integration using Multi-Level Rubric Assessment

As 3-D CAD modeling has become preferred drawing and drafting methods, most engineering organizations and educational institutions have to include the teaching of 3-D CAD modeling into their program. However, the integration of CAD into traditional drawing course was proved to be a difficult task due to an enormous design space and high level of interactions. This paper aimed to design a systematic procedure based on a multi-level rubric approach for integrating 3-D CAD modeling into an engineering drawing course. Firstly, the course learning outcomes was defined to guide as main objectives. The required CAD skills for achieving these CLOs were then defined. The mapping of tasks assigned with a specific set of skills was carefully performed. By combining the required skills matrix and the mapping between tasks and skills, the multi-level rubric was then formed. The rubric was used to evaluate the CAD learning quality. Its observations and discussions were then analyzed and proved to be useful. Thus, the proposed procedure can be used to help design the course structure of related topics in the near future.
