Investigation on the Usage and Development of Elements of Modern Western Medicine in China Based on Diachronic Newspaper Corpus

This study analyzes data from "Shen Bao" and "People's Daily" between 1872 and 2015 to explore the evolution of Western medical culture in China. It identifies three key phases in the dissemination of Western medicine: indifference, prosperity/flux, and stability. Western medicine was initially introduced by missionaries. Subsequently, there was a rapid spread and diversification of services, especially in cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou. Finally, a period of stability emerged with a consistent use of Western medical elements and the integration of Chinese and Western medicine practicest.
