LoRaWAN Behavior Analysis in a Linear Topology for Border Monitoring

Today, the IoT has revolutionized many fields, including agriculture, healthcare and the economy. As a result, new concepts such as industry 4.0, smart cities, hospital 2.0, autonomous vehicles, etc. are emerging. In Senegal, the challenges linked to IoT are mainly related to agriculture and security, particularly in the southern part of the country known as Casamance. This part of the country faces numerous security challenges at its borders, despite the presence of the national army. Cattle theft is a recurrent problem, and the solutions adopted by our governments are not always sustainable or adequate, since they are based mainly on human intervention. A solution based on surveillance using connected objects could help to considerably reduce illegal activities in general, and cattle rustling in particular. The aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of the LoRaWAN communication protocol used in IoT in the case of a linear deployment for border line surveillance. Such a deployment must help to monitor nocturnal activities in the area by sending alert and warning messages in the event of suspicious activity. This analysis focuses more on the reliability of the information sent to users such as the army, populations, etc. So, we evaluate the performance of LoRaWAN in terms of collision rate, delivery, etc.
