Optimal PMU Placement Using BAOA by Considering Variable Cost

Implementation of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for reliable monitoring, control, and protection of electrical grids has been increasing in various parts of the world. The PMU placement problem aims to attain observability of all the buses for voltage phasor measurements in the system by placing optimal number of PMUs and locating the buses for placement by considering different factors based on the application desired. This paper implemented Binary Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (BAOA) to find minimum count of PMUs and their bus locations such that the given system is observable completely. The key objective of this paper is to include variable cost for each PMU against the consideration of equal cost for all PMUs when unlimited number of channels are considered. The suggested optimization method (BAOA) is implemented on different IEEE test bus systems (9, 14, 24, and 30) by considering variable and equal cost of PMUs.
