Response Analysis of a DC Motor for Electric Vehicular Applications

An electric motor being the heart of an EV and transmits battery power to drive the vehicle load. The vehicle load torque generated at the vehicle tyre is a function of velocity, area of the vehicle, vehicle mass etc. This paper discusses the suitability of DC motors for EV applications. A MATLAB/Simulink Model for electric vehicle modelling is presented where the torque, power and energy required at the tyres of the vehicle to drive a given load are estimated. It is concluded that direct current motor may not be the optimal choice for the specified vehicular load due to a high initial starting current beyond permissible limit, slower time response and underutilization of motor power warranting a comprehensive analysis of alternative motor types to improve overall performance and efficiency.
