Dual Mode EV Battery Charger Integrating Solar PV-Grid-Load with DC Charging

Increasing reliance of electric vehicle (EV) charging on grid power is posing adverse impact on the grid operation. In order to reduce burden on the grid, this paper presents an EV battery charging method that can operate in dual modes of standalone (SA) and grid-charging (GC). It is powered by a single-phase grid, battery energy storage (BESS), and solar photovoltaic (PV) array. Analysis has been done with and without BESS in two modes. The EV battery charging is achieved, while simultaneously feeding necessary residential loads, and transfer of balance active power to the grid. The dc link capacitor across the boost converter is connected to the battery charging converter for charging of the BESS. By providing active and reactive power in grid charging mode, the BESS helps to reduce the PV and load intermittencies. A high-performance control system that uses phase-locked loop (PLL) based on a cascaded non-identical second order generalized integrator method, ensures effective operation during various conditions. The MATLAB simulations verify system performance under different operating modes.
