Design of a Low Phase Noise and High Linearity Differential/Quadrature Voltage-Controlled Oscillator for WiFi and 5G NR Applications

This paper describes the work on a single-core differential LC-tank VCO and a dual-core quadrature LC-tank VCO. The design has been simulated TSMC 180nm technology. Low Phase noise and a more linear tuning range are achieved for the proposed VCO designs. Designs are compared with conventional LC-tank VCO and QVCO. Phase noise of −120.58 dBc/Hz and −116.06 dBc/Hz is achieved for proposed VCO and QVCO, respectively, with a high linearity tuning range targeting WiFi and 5G NR spectrum.
