Design of 2 × 2 Antenna Array with Mesh Strip Elements for WLAN 5.8 GHz Band

The paper presents a design of 2 × 2 microstrip array designed for WLAN 5.8 GHz band application. The antenna array is fabricated on an FR4 substrate material with a dielectric constant of 4.4, thickness of 1.6 mm, and a loss tangent of 0.0245. The overall dimensions of the antenna are 230 mm × 94 mm × 1.6 mm. The antenna is feed using a 50-ohm SMA connector. It consists of 4 mesh strips as radiating elements. To ensure coherent radiation from elements, one pairs of mesh strips with reverse phase, a λ/2 (180°) bending segment is incorporated to align their phases. Finally, by employing quarter-wave impedance matching and microstrip lines, a 2 × 2 microstrip array with four mesh strip elements is realized. The design with good gain and performances is suitable for the wireless applications with longer distances.
