Low-loss fusion splicing of silica and fluoride fibers

ZBLAN fibers, distinct from conventional silica-based fibers, exhibit remarkably low phonon energy. This unique property renders them highly effective for transmitting signals in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum, an area rich in molecular structural information. This aspect is crucial for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and chemical sensing applications. However, consistent methodologies for handling these fibers are essential to fully exploit the mid-IR potential of ZBLAN fibers. This includes establishing efficient connections between ZBLAN and silica fibers as well as between doped and passive ZBLAN fibers In dealing with soft-glass fibers like ZBLAN, precise control over thermal splicing conditions is necessary. This study thoroughly explores thermal splicing conditions using the Vytran GPX-3400 system, aiming to achieve controlled, low-loss, mechanically strong splicing joints between ZBLAN and silica fibers.
