Initial Characterization on the Magnet System of MSL Kibble Balance

This paper describes some initial characterization on the magnet system of the MSL Kibble balance. The magnet system has been designed to create a radial magnetic field in the annular gap that is shielded from external fields. The magnet system that consists of a ring-shaped permanent magnet housed in a yoke has been assembled. We report on some initial measurements of the magnetic flux density and its dependence on the air temperature. We have also evaluated the induced voltage to coil velocity (U/v) ratio of the magnet-coil arrangement using oscillatory moving coil.
