Mapping and Bathymetry of Glacial Lakes in the Himalaya Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data

Glacial lakes play an important role in keeping the hydrological balance for the local communities in the Himalayan region. Here, we present methods based on satellite remote sensing that can map and derive depth of glacial lake in the Himalaya. We used Google Earth Engine platform and accessed Sentinel and Landsat data to map glacial lakes and validate using very high-resolution Planet data. We combined ICESat-2 laser photon data and multispectral data from Sentinel and Landsat missions to spatially resolve lake depths and volumes and showed their potential.
