Baseline Information from Remote Sensing Imagery for Wetland And Lagoons Restauration in Argentina

The historical and current availability of satellite data of higher spatial and spectral resolution makes it possible to analyze spatio-temporal changes in a precise and operational manner promoting the generation of baseline information (landuse/landcover maps, change detection, chlorophyll-a estimation in inland waters, among other) for environmental studies. The present work is part of an ecological restoration project that seeks to relate different disciplines, highlighting the active role of universities and research centers as important drivers of development and promotion of sustainable solutions over time. At the same time, it seeks that the information generated can be used as a management tool for authorities in territorial planning, which is of utmost importance in the current context of climate change, in compliance with the goals of SDG 6 (on Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 15 (on Life in Terrestrial Ecosystems). In this sense, the objective of this paper is the application of remote sensing information analysis techniques that serve as a starting point to understand the dynamics and nature of freshwater bodies and wetland areas in the Pampean region, Argentina. The particular situation in the study area is influenced by a lack of adequate treatment of the urban effluents that are discharged into one of the lagoons (Las Perdices, San Miguel del Monte, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). For this study we use multiples data sources of series imagery (Landsat 5 TM, 8 OLI, and Spot 6/7), land cover maps products (Trinational Pampa MapBiomas Collection 3) in an environment of process as Google Earth Engine (GEE) and GIS (QGIS 3.28.9-Firenze).
