Characterization of Leak Rate and Detection Limits for Methane Airborne Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging

Airborne Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) hyperspectral imaging systems provide a powerful tool for the remote detection of methane gas leaks and emissions. By utilizing a powerful radiative transfer model embedded within Telops software packages, the Hyper-Cam Airborne Mini is capable of producing live methane detection and quantification data with associated detection limits. A large blind test measurement campaign was undertaken to create of a detection matrix which will be used to influence future discussions on research, development, and adjustments to detection limit standards based on the needs and guidance of oil and gas industry actors, and regulators. In addition to the results provided by the detection matrix, the methodology by which leak rates for methane plumes are determined will be outlined.
