Archaeoinformatics: Approaches to Natural and Urban Landscape for Documenting and Recovering Cultural Memory

In recent years the rate of convergence of new technologies with the humanities has been stormy. As a result, the emergence of the terms digital humanities as well as archaeoinformatics. Focusing on the scientific field of archaeology, new technologies claim more and more "space" in matters of archaeological sites’ georeference, documentation and holistic data management, as well as information dissemination, thus leading to the emergence of new practices and processes of participation of the wider society in matters of cultural heritage integrated management, leading to the term of public archaeology. [75]; [85]; [14]In the afore-mentioned context, two distinct case-studies are going to be briefly described in the specific paper, in which the combined application of remote sensing, photointerpretation and GIS methodology have successfully contributed in locating buried archaeological relics at the plateau of the northern arm of Voidokoilia bay, Peloponnesus, uninhabited in modern times, in the first case, and in locating destroyed architectural assets (landmarks) within the dense urban web of the modern city of Ioannina, Epirus, in the second case, along with also achieving the cultural relics’ qualitative and quantitave documentation. Both sites are located in Greece.
