A Flood Detection Algorithm Based on Fengyun-4 Satellite

It is important to carry out monitoring and assessment of flood disasters to improve the efficiency of disaster prevention and mitigation. This study utilizes China's second-generation geostationary meteorological satellite Feng Yun-4A (FY-4A) Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) data for the efficient flood monitoring in China through uses of high temporal resolutions. Through the synthesis of multi-temporal images of the flood water body, the influence of clouds is effectively eliminated. According to the band characteristics of AGRI, the Combined Index of NDVI and NIR for Water Body Identification (CIWI) algorithm was used to complete the extraction of flood inundation range on the cloud-cleared images.
