M2M-TEE: A Many-to-Many Communication Multi-Channel and Timed Energy Efficient MAC Protocol for WSNs

Some medium access control (MAC) protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) guarantee a collision-free exchange of data packets but at a higher cost of latency. Furthermore, many of these protocols waste the opportunity to exchange their data over multiple frequency channels and to use techniques such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and multi-packet transmission and reception (MPTR), which could provide great advantages such as reducing latency and increasing throughput. This paper presents a new many-to-many communication multi-channel and timed energy efficient (M2M-TEE) MAC protocol for 802.15.4-based WSNs that enables data collision-free communication, and whose applications consider a higher latency cost acceptable. The results show that M2M-TEE has lower energy consumption per bit, higher network throughput, and lower latency compared to other related protocols.
