Channel Estimation for mmWave MIMO-OFDM Systems Using Time Domain 3-D Tensor-ESPRIT in DFT beamspace

This paper presents a time domain channel estimation scheme for a hybrid millimeter wave multi-carrier system operating in a frequency-selective environment. The proposed method is based on the Time Domain 3-D Tensor ESPRIT in DFT Beamspace, with an additional beamspace transformation along the frequency dimension. We show that the proposed algorithm in the time domain has a superior performance, especially when a large number of pilot tones is available. Moreover, we demonstrate how to improve the system performance further via a comb-type placement of pilot subcarriers and additional preprocessing techniques, such as smoothing and forward-backward averaging. We verify the performance of the proposed algorithm via numerical simulations based on Monte Carlo trials.
