Model of Dental Implant Cuff for Minimizing Stress Distribution Around Implant-Bone Interface: A 3-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis

This study aims to compare the stress distribution patterns around implants with various cuff or neck diameters in the mandibular area using the finite element method. Three implant bodies with different diameters of cuffs were designed using Autodesk Fusion 360. Different cuff diameters of 5, 6, and 7 mm were designed for an implant body of 11 mm in length and 5 mm in diameter. Vertical and oblique loads of 100 N were applied to each model design. A linear static analysis was carried out to determine the stresses and deformations generated. Large changes in stress distribution in the peri-implant bone were observed when implants with various cuffs were placed in the edentulous mandible. The maximum von Mises stress was found around the cuff of the implant. This showed that when the implant cuff was expanded, the von Mises stress decreased statistically significantly. The implant cuff dimension affects the load transmission mechanism and stress distribution around the bone-implant interface. Furthermore, the larger diameter of the cuff or neck can reduce more stress and displacement around the implant-bone interface. The findings in this study could be taken into consideration when selecting implant designs for poor bone applications.
