The Impact of Electric Arc Furnaces on the Cuban Power System: Existing Approaches and Future Prospects

In this paper, a detailed analysis of the main electrical problems arising in the Cuban electrical system because of the operation of electric arc furnaces is made. It also provides an overview of the solutions that have been taken in the steel mills to mitigate some of these problems and analyzes the remaining technical issues. Using simulation results, several solutions are analyzed individually, from the perspective of the different electrical problems, justifying each variant with conditions very similar to the real ones of the Cuban electrical system.
