Tuning of Plasmonic Phenomena in Spoon-Shaped Waveguides Via a Novel Measurement Configuration

The capabilities of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors realized in spoon-shaped waveguides are exploited in this work to achieve a novel sensor configuration. More specifically, the SPR phenomena are excited via a different position of the plastic optical fibers (POFs) that connect the sensing region with the light source and the detector. The bowl's angled faces of the spoon-shaped waveguides are used to obtain different SPR phenomena with respect to other sensor configurations already presented in the literature. The several optical responses of this kind of plasmonic probe based on spoon-shaped waveguides can be combined with specific receptor layers to change the substance of interest and the detection range for the specific bio/chemical application.
