Analysis of an IoT-Based Monitoring System for Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors Interrogation

The proposed document outlines the pre-industrialization of a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor monitoring system, leveraging the Internet of Things (loT) technology. Nowadays, monitoring systems for Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS) often restricts the design and implementation of FOS-based networks, prompting the substitution with less capable electronic sensor system. This is due their inherent complexity and cost. The system here proposed aims to surmount the limitations of current commercial interrogators by transforming conventional FBG monitoring systems (i.e., interrogators) into an loT -based monitoring system in which each circuit works as a sensory node actively exchanging and publishing data on the cloud. In this paradigm, the conceptual framework allows for deployment in challenging environments, taking advantages of fiber optic technology. In this case study the system design is shown, going deeper into the optical composition, which is based on totally passive devices, and the electronic one. This latter is explained through the analog part, Then, the software part is shown as well, focusing on the detection algorithm. Finally, experimental validation by means of simultaneous measurements with commercial interrogation system is shown.
