Blockchain Integration in FIFA Clearing House: Enhancing Security and Operational Efficiency

The present paper, after a theoretical discussion on the application of the blockchain to the Clearing House systems, proposes such application to the FIFA Clearing House, an entity conceived by the International Football Federation with the purpose of collection and distribution of the compensations and contribution that some football clubs may be entitled to under certain condition in a transfer of a player.The research employs a mixed-method approach integrating theoretical analysis with comparative case studies. The initial theoretical exploration focuses on the FIFA Clearing House, aiming to identify the specific technical, operational, and regulatory challenges within these systems and exploring how blockchain technology might address these issues.Subsequently, the study includes case studies from outside the sports sector, like the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, to identify adaptable best practices. This section aims to draw parallels between the financial sector’s experiences and the potential within sports management.The paper also examines various blockchain architectures, analysing their suitability in terms of data privacy, security, and regulatory compliance, essential for effective application in the FIFA Clearing House setting.Conclusively, while blockchain technology offers transformative potential for streamlining operations and enhancing security and transparency, substantial challenges in technology adoption, staff training, and system integration remain. The successful implementation of blockchain could lead to significant operational efficiencies and cost reductions, yet the transition necessitates overcoming significant cultural, technological, and regulatory barriers. Future research is needed to explore further integration and overcome these existing challenges, potentially facilitated by emerging technologies like the Digital Euro and new regulatory frameworks.
