Data acquisition and analysis of ILCA 6 dinghies sailing upwind

The study focused on the acquisition of data describing the dynamic of ILCA 6 dinghies sailing upwind, in order to obtain information about the dynamic of the vessels with the future perspective of designing an ergometer for the laboratory analysis of hiking, a particular position that ILCA 6 sailors assume on upwind in medium and strong wind. The ILCA 6s of 6 participants were equipped with IMU and GPS sensors and the sailors were asked to complete their usual training to log data on the field. Data acquisition was performed with the aim of identifying the amplitude and frequency of the roll of the dinghies. The amplitude of the roll was estimated by computing its average value (1.56° ± 1.2°) and by considering the maximum registered roll (14.07°). The frequency of the roll was identified and indicated that the dynamic of an ILCA 6 has frequencies below 2 Hz. The logger firmware and the test data are available on an open-access platform with the aim of increasing the dataset. Future steps include the implementation of the ergometer and the start of a testing phase with athletes to investigate their hiking technique.
