A Novel Skewed Permanent Magnet Technique for Improving Performances of SPMSMs with Outer Rotor Type

Surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) are extensively used in industrial applications because of their exceptional performance, dependability, and versatility in terms of shapes and sizes. There are two primary types of SPMSM based on the construction of the rotor: SPMSM with inner rotor configuration and SPMSM with outer rotor configuration. In this context, a skewed permanent magnet (PM) technique is proposed to improve performances of the SPMSM with outer rotor type, such as improvement of back electromagnetic force and reduction of cogging torque. The novel approach allows to use multiple slices of PMs with different angles instead of applying with a single slice as in the previous studies. The computation process is approached with both analytical background and finite element analysis (FEA). Where the analytical model is first established to determine essential parameters of the machine, the FEA is finally developed to compute and simulate electromagnetic parameters based on the analytical results. The development of both method are verified on the practical SPMSM of 5.5kW.
