The influence of background continuity on "hole" object cognition

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the continuity of the background will affect the perception of the hole as an object through the object-based attention effect. The stimuli used in the study were similar to those in Albrecht et al.'s study, with the exception that the hole rotated 90 ° clockwise to differentiate it from the background. The results show that when the background is complete, the object-based effect does not appear, indicating that the hole will not be perceived as a separate object. When the background is segmented, the hole will be perceived as an object, resulting in an object effect. Therefore, the continuity of the background and the integration of the hole with the background should influence the perception of the hole as an object. This study further emphasizes the relationship between foreground objects and background regions, which affects the distribution of visual attention.
