Feasibility of NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M for Vehicle-to-Cloud Communication

This paper presents a measurement-based feasibility study and discusses the challenges of Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and Long Term Evolution Category-M (LTE Cat-M) technologies for automotive applications. Based on the study, it is identified that NB-IoT technology offers greater reliability in comparison to Cat- M technology. Whereas Cat- M can provide a lower communication delay when compared to NB-IoT. Therefore, Cat-M is more suitable for applications that require higher data rates and lower delay. At the same time, NB-IoT is better suited for high-reliability demanded applications.
