Analysis of Torsional Deformation in an Elongated Shaft

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of torsional deformation in an elongated shaft (Cast Carbon Steel Shaft and Stainless-Steel Shaft), including the derivation of the torsional equation, boundary conditions, and the solution using the finite element method. The torsional equation is derived based on the assumption of small deformations and linear elastic behavior. The design and simulation processes were carried out on SolidWorks. The simulation was carried out using two different materials namely: cast carbon steel and stainless steel across the same torsional load which was 2000N-m. The loads were applied at both ends of the shaft and were simulated to rotate in opposite directions. Comparisons with analytical answers and test results are used to confirm the solution’s accuracy. This analysis provides insights into the behavior of elongated shafts under torsional loading and highlights the importance of considering the effect of torsional deformation in the design of such systems. The findings of this research can be used to improve the safety and reliability of elongated shafts.
