A Review of Surface Active Coatings for Sprinkler Pipes in Building Services Application

Pipes made of mild steel are susceptible to internal corrosion resulting into failure. Sprinkler pipes in building services are often attacked by corrosion which results in poor mechanical and microstructure properties, high cost of maintenance, replacement and safety. The development of surface active coatings for building services to improve performance and reliability has become a major consideration recently. Surface active coatings developed can prevent or reduce these problems by altering the surface chemistry of the pipes. These coatings can inhibit the formation of scale and corrosion, improve flow rates, and reduce the risk of blockages. Thus, this paper reviewed the incessant cases of failures in pipes, the chemistry of the deformation and the possibility of reducing the degradation tendencies. This review shows that incessant cases of failures in pipes occur as a result of electrochemical reactions leading to build-up of ion and chloride formation in pipes. Corrosion occurs when most or all of the atoms on metal surface are oxidized, and losing electrons to oxygen (and other substances) in the air or in water it forms oxides with metals which leads to degradation of pipes. Furthermore, the review confirms that the degradation tendencies of pipes are greatly reduced using electrodeposition coating technique due to the exceptional quality of films produced, controlled thickness and morphology, ability to coat a wide range of component size/shape and ease of industrial processing.
