Environmental Accounting and Performance of Listed Oil and Gas Firms in Nigeria

The research investigation looks at how listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria operate in relation to environmental accounting. The present investigation uses an ex post facto investigation approach and analyzes data from the yearly financial statements of three out of 11 listed oil and gas corporations on the Nigerian stock exchange market between 2015 and 2020 using the technique of content analysis and the Multiple Weighted Regression method. According to the investigation's findings, the efficiency of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria is significantly impacted by their environmental accounting practices regarding fines and penalties as well as waste management; in contrast, the performance of these firms is not significantly impacted by their ecological donations and compensation systems. Consequently, it is advised that, investors in the and gas sector should use income from the business activities of the firms in engaging in environmentally friendly activities that will meet the sustainable development goals as well better the health, social and economic life of the host communities. Also, the government in Nigeria should map out policies that will engage the oil and gas firms in carrying out proper waste management. This will go a long way in reducing the harmful effect of the activities carried out by the firms and providing alternatives that will better the lives of the host community which in turn will provide a friendly environment for the firms to operate.
