A Concise Review of Green Hydrogen Production Technologies

The continuous exploitation and utilization of fossil-based (FB) energy sources has exacerbated global warming and environmental degradation. This scenario has necessitated renewed interest in developing clean, affordable, and sustainable energy sources for various applications. Research into the application of green hydrogen is gaining traction among the scientific community as a clean energy source and a possible substitute to FB energy sources. Not surprisingly, the quest for clean, affordable, eco-friendly, and sustainable energy sources has increased researchers’ interest in the technologies for the production of green hydrogen. This review examines the recent advancements in the technologies for the production of green hydrogen. A brief overview of the description, production process, outcomes, benefits, and drawbacks of the identified production technologies. While the various water electrolysis technologies offer sustainable electrochemical water splitting techniques for converting water molecules to green hydrogen, the integrated pyrolysis-gasification biomass conversion technology is cost-effective, contributes to biomass-to-energy conversion, and effective waste management strategies. More collaborative research is required to ensure high-purity products, cost reduction, process improvement, and commercialization perspective.
