Influence of eggshell addition on the properties of natural fibre-reinforced epoxy composite – A mini-review

Advocating for pollution reduction in the environment is paramount in this dispensation. Eggshells, which contribute to landfills, have found their usefulness in composite formation. For some years, attention has been shifted to converting waste into useful products. The use of eggshells in composite development needs exploration as industries and academia have shifted focus to natural fibres in composite composition. This is due to their high potential of replacing synthetic fibres in many applications such as automotive parts, wind turbine blades, building construction, and furniture. They possess low density, biodegradability, and better mechanical properties than composite produced from synthetic reinforcing fibres. This review reports on using eggshells as filler to enhance the natural fiber-reinforced epoxy composite’s physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. The natural fibre-reinforced composite properties have been studied without or with fillers and compared to ascertain the filler’s effect on the overall composite property. Eggshell was preferred as a filler material because of its lightweight, availability, low cost, pollution reduction in terms of landfills, and biodegradability.
