Strength Reliability Assessment of Glass-Aluminium Shavings Cement-Bonded Boards

Industrialization in developing countries like Nigeria is on the increase, some of the back lashes of this development is the dumping of solid waste which has constituted a major health and environmental challenge. This study evaluated the Physical and Mechanical properties of Cement Bonded Particle Boards made of waste glass and aluminum shavings. Nine Board of different composition where produced and tested for physical properties such as water absorption, thickness swelling and density and mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity an modulus of rupture. Water absorption had values ranging from 3.03 to 5.84%, thickness swelling had values ranging from 3.51 to 12.82%, density had values ranging from 1970.38kg/m

to 2711.45kg/m

. The results obtained from the test of physical properties showed that all the boards produced met the requirement of Indian Standard of cement bonded particle board specification. The modulus of rupture and the modulus of elasticity ranged from 1.133N/mm

to 7.84N/mm
²
and 67.74N/mm
²
to 432.06N/mm
²
respectively. The results obtained from the mechanical properties showed that the boards cannot be used for structural use but for non-structural works, as the results obtained fell below the requirement for structural use by Australian Standard.
